Volunteering, Activities and Studying

Dear Parent:
You may ask yourself, “What can I do to fulfill my 20-hour commitment to WMPCS?”
There are many exciting and worthwhile activities planned for the class this year. Some are planned by your child’s classroom teachers and others by the school’s organizations. These activities are not just opportunities for your children, but also excellent venues for you to participate with your child and volunteer your time.
Money and time are precious to all of us. So, in order for your family to plan budgets and schedule activities effectively and efficiently, we will do our best to provide an updated schedule of events and associated fees as soon as the activities are made official.
Just as the old Uncle Sam posters used to say, “We Need You!” – well, how true! We do!
As Room Parents, we will be contacting you by phone to describe class trips and activities; this will allow you the opportunity to ask questions about volunteering. Also, you may view the class blog regularly for supplemental information and opportunities to volunteer. Please check the class blog regularly.
You may leave comments under the blog entries if you have any questions and suggestions. Our e-mail addresses are also provided for your correspondence and convenience. As always, please remember to record your volunteer time in the log at the front desk of the school office.
CLASS ACTIVITIES/ VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Please review the following activities. Unless otherwise noted, please select at least one activity in which you will volunteer this year:
·       WMPCS is celebrating its 10 year anniversary on Saturday, November 13, 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Our class must provide 250 cans of drink for this celebration. We are asking EACH FAMILY to bring in 12 cans to contribute or donate money for the purchase of the cans. If you are unable to provide the amount requested, please contribute as you are able; anything is appreciated. Cans may be dropped off at the school NO LATER THAN MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8; this will allow us the time to purchase additional cans if needed.
·       Student Reading – Need one parent each morning to read stories and listen to children practice reading.
·       Practicing Sight Words – Need one parent to assist each morning to go over words with children and prep them for spelling tests.
·       Classroom Cleanup – Need one to three parents on Friday afternoon of each week to perform general housekeeping duties.
·       Red Plate Days – One day a month, Red Plate Day offers each teacher the opportunity to have a break away from the classroom for one hour. We need one parent to assist in the classroom for two hours each month (one hour with Ms. Farmer and the other hour with Mrs. Miller). Red Plate Day for our class is scheduled the third Tuesday of the month, unless otherwise noted. So far, the dates for this activity are: October 19, November 16 and December 14.
·       Friday, November 19, Thanksgiving Celebration – Students will develop the menu for the class meal; each child is responsible for a dish to contribute. We need parents to assist in setting up/ serving/ cleaning up.
·       Tuesday, November 23, Nursing Home visit – Need parents to assist class in making simple remembrance gifts for residents and parents to chaperone children on visit. Ideas for gift are appreciated. Craft making supplies may also be donated once the gift to be made is determined.
·       Wednesday, December 8, Class Trip to Turnage Theater in Washington – Need five parents to chaperone/ drive children to and from the destination. The cost per student is $10 for the production of “Cinderella” by the American Theater Arts for Youth.
·       Friday, December 17, ½ Day Activity – The class will be making gingerbread cookies; need parents to contribute supplies and assist students as needed.
·       Monday-Tuesday April 11-12, “Sleeping with the Sharks” at the Roanoke Island Aquarium in Manteo – Trip includes a tour, snack, two specially chosen activities and breakfast – and of course a night in front of the Graveyard of the Atlantic tank, with sharks and other fish swimming around the students. More details on number of chaperones/ drivers and fees to come.
STUDYING IS IMPORTANT
Lastly, Ms. Farmer and Mrs. Miller have asked us to remind you to look for WORK FOLDERS being sent home with your child. Once you have retrieved the material from the folders, please return them with your child the next day so the folders may be used again for future work being sent home. It is essential to stress to your child the importance of making good work choices and studying away from the classroom. We have provided some helpful links on the class blog, to assist you and your child in this regard.
Provides free math worksheets, free math games, grammar quizzes and free phonics worksheets and games.
Helps students with spelling by testing, teaching and playing games.
Assists students in test taking and learning of various subjects. Each child has been given a password; contact Mrs. Barmer if you have questions.
If you do not have access to a computer and would like regular printouts of the class blog entries, please contact us and we will provide them to you. We look forward to working with you this year. Thank you for volunteering and helping WMPCS the wonderful school it is for your child.
Sincerely,
Lisa Lawless and Margaret Heifferon, Room Parents
